Sh*t Sundays

We travelled down from Cairns to the WhitSundays, which are a group of 'idylic' islands close to the Great Barrier Reef. I was really looking forward to the kind of R&R that 160 notes a night buys, so surely nothing could go wrong, especially after this shot of SWDU on Hamilton, the main Island...!

...How wrong could I be! The resort had just been purchased by Club Crocodile in a murky deal involving a didgeriedoo and a gross of koalas. The end result was a swiftly renamed Club Crocko'sh*t by SWDU!

The beach had been stripped of sand for a local kiddies playground and the rooms had been purchased from a bloke in Beirut who had swapped them for an oozie using Ebay. He also chucked in the 1973 Butlins operating manual, which the Island later embraced with some gusto!

To help you picture the scene, here's a couple of pics of the room. I particularly liked the balcony, which had been styled around the cells at Alcatraz.

Undeterred, we decided to explore the island further and walked through the forest to the neighbouring resort. We later found out that Queensland has ten of the deadliest eleven snakes in the world - and then there's the the nasty spiders, too! Won't be doing that again!!!

Oh well...Worse things happen at sea I guess...!

  • Shame about the prison cell, guess you had to hit a negative at some point, but the location still looks pretty good! So how is New Zealand - is it much different from Oz?

  • Worse things happen in water... Watch out for the Stingrays... I hear they don't like people called Steve..

Shame to hear about the Croc Hunter, it's big news over here

at mine for a few days-get him to drop us a line if he
    wants to meet up.

  • The prison cell was the best part of the island. I'd recommend the Maldives any day of the week! They're much better than the Barrier Reef :-)

  • Thanks Ali - it would be good to hook up in Wellington as I think I'll be up there for about three days in about three weeks...

As it happens, the pics on the previous blog are from Upollo Cay, which is the next reef to the one where nutter bloke was killed! The good news is that only 3 people have ever been killed by one. The bad news is that they were all called Steve

Strewth mate / cobber I remember you thinking it was a lot even when you thought it would be a nice place!
Never mind, I'm sure you'll spend more money you wish you hadn't that'll make that one seem less significant before you get back to the luxurious accomodation in HW.

  • If only Steve Irwin had stuck to crocodiles he'd be alive today. I've just got back from France and there wasn't any news about it at all there. Mind you the French approach to beautiful tropical islands is to blow them up with nuclear bombs so maybe it's not surprising.
